European Tent Pegging Association

The ETPA is the central organisation of all European national Tent Pegging associations.

It focuses on supporting riders of all member states and the promotion of Tent Pegging across Europe. In collaboration with the national associations, the ETPA organises the European championship every two years.

As a member of the International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF), the ETPA share their goals to foster the centuries-old sport of Tent Pegging and to strengthen its growth. Founding members in December 2018 were the associations of Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Norway.

Tent pegging

The contemporary sport of Tent Pegging has its roots in mounted cavalry drills.

Today’s sport uses those original skills to develop sharp hand-eye coordination from the rider, combined with the speed of a fast horse to create an exciting team, pair and individual equestrian sport. In a full gallop and from horseback, small pegs are aimed at with a lance or sword and picked from the ground. Other targets may hang at the height of the Rider’s head. Rings have to be taken up or lemons have to be cut. Competitions are ridden single or as a team of two or four. In addition to the spectacle and speed of straight-run Tent Pegging, Skill at Arms courses require control, discipline and good aim from the rider as they use the sword, lance and pistol or “pricker” to score points from hitting targets whilst jumping fences and overcoming obstacles.

Every four years, the International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF) hosts the Tent Pegging World Finals. Nations compete for the coveted final places from qualifiers around the world in the preceding months.

The origin of the sport is not exactly known. It is assumed to be started in the days of the Persian Cavalry, developed by the Indian Cavalry in the days of the British Empire. The equestrian sport spread via the Commonwealth. Tent Pegging was most likely used for cavalry drill and the training of riders for use with lance and sword. These days it is spread worldwide. A centuries-old tradition became a contemporary sport.
